EDIT : Ok, so I got off the phone with Fidelity. Their rule when it comes to day-trading spreads is that you cannot mess with the legs individually i.e. if you open a spread, you have to close it as a spread. Since I closed the short leg by itself, the system disregarded the spread, and traded it as if I had opened and closed a naked short option.
